Descendant of Shao Jun

In the translation of issue 34, Han say that he and Sun are descendants of the Great Assassin master "Xiao Yun", isn't it a bad translation for Shao Jun ? Maxattac (talk) 22:34, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello Max, yes this is a translation mistake. Good job deducing that. We actually figured out how the problem came about on Discord. Soranin first located that in the Korean for Forgotten Temple, following the precedent in the Korean version of Chronicles: China, Shao Jun's name is transliterated from Mandarin to Korean as 샤오윤 (Sy-o Yun).

This is already an error because there is always a 1:1 correspondence between Chinese and Korean names, so the Korean translators should've just converted the Chinese name instead of transliterating. (The closest example I can think of for English-speakers is how Matthew, Mathieu, Mateo, Mathias, Matteo, etc. are all the same names in different European languages). Apart from this, the Korean translators went by the mispronunciation of Jun in Embers as Yun.

Compounding this issue is that because Ubisoft apparently hadn't decided on the actual Chinese name for Shao Jun initially, but only thought of a Chinese-sounding name, Chinese and Japanese translators on their end also had to figure out the proper hanzi/kanji for her name themselves. They decided upon 少芸 (Shao Yun in Mandarin, Shō Un in Japanese, So Un in Korean), which is still incorrect because it follows by the mispronunciation used in Embers. As a result, fans have alternatively used the hanzi/kanji 邵君 (Shao Jun), which is correct to the name in English media but not official. This would be Shõ Kun in Japanese or So Gun in Korean.

In any case, Shao Jun's name in Korean should be either So Un or So Gun. But Korean translators awkwardly transliterated Shao Yun into the 3-syllable Sy-o Un. Finally, when Forgotten Temple was translated into English, the confused translators assumed Sy-o was transliterating Xiao not Shao and that the individual was someone other than Shao Jun.
