Wrong gate?[edit source]
The Rafiq in Acre (Memory Block 5) claims that St. John's Gate is north of the Assassins Bureau, which would make it a gate to the Kingdom at the top of the map (Middle District, where I believe a pickpocket mission is located). I can't ascertain how the article concludes that it is the two entrances leading to the docks, so I was wondering whether this might be an error, or if there is an unmentioned source that confirms this is the case (perhaps the basis of a real-life location?). Any clarification would be helpful, thanks! --Bluerock (talk) 19:20, August 15, 2019 (UTC)
- We would have to double-check. This article hasn't been updated in years, and we can't verify how the original contributor came to this conclusion. I've been searching online for maps of old Acre, but none that I've found so far have the name of the gates labelled. I also don't have the game with me nor the time so far to do a thorough search, but I will get around to it, or you can yourself if you have the time. If you happen to verify that this article is in error, you can certainly go ahead and fix it yourself! In any case, thank you for bring this to our attention. - I've revisited the game recently and was following the Rafiq's instructions rather than relying on the in-game map, which naturally led me to the northern Kingdom gate I mentioned above (actually the location of an eavesdropping mission).
- There is a pickpocket mission by one of those gates leading to the docks, from which the target intends to travel to St. John's Gate according to his dialogue (“He asked that I deliver a letter to a courier at Saint John’s Gate. I best not keep him waiting.”), but it isn't clear whether he's referring to the northern Kingdom gate or a second St. John's gate as would be implied by the article (although he only travels as far as a nearby church). I wanted to link to this investigation, but there appears to be no related article (I think it may be a console-exclusive mission).
- The only other clue is that the Rafiq states that the lead to follow is in front of St. John's Gate, but which side would be considered the front is unclear. In the case of the northern Kingdom gate, the front could either be the entrance outside the walls, which would be beyond the city and thus inaccesible, or it could mean the public space located "before" the gate, leading out of the city.
- I will update the article if I become more confident that it requires correction, but I first wanted to make sure there were no AC1 books or reference guides that might have given a definitive statement on the matter. --Bluerock (talk) 15:59, August 16, 2019 (UTC)
- After some more research, I've discovered that it is the Prima Game Guide that claims the two gates to the docks are the "Saint John's Gate". However, as this conflicts with all evidence presented in the game itself, I belive the game takes greater precedence over the strategy guide, and should be used as the primary source for information on this location. I have therefore decided to update the article accordingly, while referencing this discussion in the edit comment for the full reasoning behind it. --Bluerock (talk) 22:21, August 24, 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the initiative! I forgot to get back to you after I skimmed through The Secret Crusade where it did not seem like there is any reference to Saint John's Gate. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 23:21, August 24, 2019 (UTC)
