Simon Marcel (died 1793/94) was a scientist and professor at the Chemical Science School Eustache du Gary in Le Quartier Latin, Paris during the French Revolution.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Simon Marcel worked alongside fellow college professor Frison at the Chemical Science School Eustache du Gary for numerous years. As a professor, he was a harsh educator but wanted his students to work and learn what he had to offer. Formerly a man of God, Marcel also found himself believing in logic rather than religion and challenged the religious practices of his local church. he released an essay in support of Antoine Lavoisier against the phlogiston theory of combustion, which disputed Frison's findings in support of the theory.[1]
Death[edit | edit source]
One morning in his classroom, Marcel was giving a lesson on how to create Diethyl Ether from Sulfuric Acid and Ethanol. However, upon mixing the bottle, an explosion occurred and injured the professor. Fatally wounded, he made his way back home and carried a bible from the local church. Dying in his courtyard, he believed the church was behind his death in his last moments. However, when the French Assassin Arno Dorian found Marcel's body, he investigated the crime and determined Frison's hand in switching sulfuric acid with nitric acid, causing the explosion. After rightfully accusing Frison, Arno brought the college professor to jail.[1]
