Regent's Canal is a canal across an area just north of central London, England.[1] It began construction in 1812 and was completed eight years later. In July 1874,[2] the barge Tilbury was loaded with five tons of gunpowder and three barrels of petroleum[1] when it exploded in the canal section near the Maida Vale district[2] and London Zoo. The Macclesfield Bridge it was passing under was completely destroyed,[1] and the explosion caused extensive damage to nearby buildings, as well as several fatalities and injuries.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Contrary to the plot hook details for "The Regent's Canal Disaster" presented in the Assassin's Creed Roleplaying Game's third supplementary book Forging History, the 1874 explosion did not happen in July but on 2 October. The Illustrated London News, a weekly British news magazine, covered the event in their 10 October issue,[3] reporting that, "Not a few [people] were fairly tossed out of their beds by the force of the shock, which really amounted to an earthquake";[4] by December, news of it reached Brisbane, Australia, where The Queenslander relayed the London-based The Pall Mall Gazette's report that part of the Tilbury's keel was blown 300 yards away and punched through a house roof to land in the basement but miraculously did not cause any injuries.[5]
