Learnings: Anglo-Saxon Homes

Builders liked to use oak because it was solid and widely available. Wattling was a technique whereby small branches were braided together to form wooden panels. Daub was a mixture of earth, clay, and animal dung. It was used to fill the gaps between the timber or to provide a solid surface for the panels.
People's houses and living conditions varied according to their social status. The common people would live in wooden huts like this one. They would use the same space for cooking, eating, socializing, and sleeping. A wealthier member of the community would likely have a bigger house. It might include a hall as its common area, and the family would sleep in a seperate building.
