Khepri (deity)
Khepri was a god of the rising sun and scarabs in Egyptian mythology.
Mythology[edit | edit source]
Khepri was often associated with Ra and Atum. Whilst Khepri was seen as god of the rising sun, Ra was the midday sun and Atum the setting sun. As god of the rising sun, he was often revered as being capable of resurrection, like he did with the sun itself every morning.[1]
Scarabs were associated with Khepri due to the way they were born. As young beetles emerged from dung fully grown, it was said they were shaped out of thin air, thus having to be created by Khepri. Scarabs rolling balls of dung around were seen as analogous to Khepri's struggle with the sun.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In the 1st century BCE, Medjay Bayek of Siwa visited the Duat. There he encountered a shrine dedicated to the god. After climbing up a mountain he recovered one of Khepri's scarabs that functioned as a protective amulet.[2]
