John Ellis Wool (1784 – 1869) was an American officer in the United States Army. After several conflicts and wars, in 1862 he attained the rank of Major General.
Biography[edit | edit source]
New York draft riots[edit | edit source]
When the New York City draft riots broke out on 13 July 1863, Wool was in favor for conscripting any able-bodied men but also wished to draw out the riots for as long as he could. His stance on the matter being discussed at the same time by theatergoers to the Italian opera singer Adelina Patti.[1] He later deployed the federal troops in order to quell the riots, ending it in just three days.[2]
