Around the time of prior to the American Revolution, the Reverend Jonas Clarke lived in the house, thus giving the "Clarke" to the house's name.[1]

On 18 April 1775, a day before the Battles of Lexington and Concord broke out, John Hancock and Samuel Adams stayed in the residence as Clarke's guests.
