The French Crown Jewels (French: Joyaux de la Couronne de France) is the name given to the collection of jewels that were symbols of Royal or Imperial power of France between 752 and 1870.[1] In 1691, the collection was comprised of 5,885 diamonds, 1,588 precious stones, and 488 pearls. Its three most famous diamonds were the 140.64-carat white Regent Diamond, the 55.23-carat pale yellow Sancy diamond that King Louis XIV liked to affix to his hat, and the 115-carat French Blue[2] that the jeweler Jean-Baptiste Tavernier[3] brought over from the Kingdom of France's Indian colonies.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

In September 1792, rioters looted the Royal Treasury[2] and made off with a selection of the gems there.[4] In the days following the theft, the criminals organized a clandestine auction to resell the pieces at La Limace Noir, a guinguette or tavern of ill repute. Through an informant, the French Assassins learned of the auction and of the Templars' interest in certain lots. Led by Arno Dorian, a group of Assassins infiltrated the auction and stole the French Blue despite the presence of French Templars led by Justine Delarue.[3] The thieves were quickly arrested and executed at the Place de la Concorde, though many items were never recovered.[2] That same year, Arno recovered three other diamonds and saw that they were returned to the National Convention.[5]
