Templars vs. Templar Order members[edit source]
The user who emptied this page and moved every page within it to "Category:Templar Order members" using a bot had acted without community discussion, and I had always thought that it was premature. At the very least, I have objections to it though perhaps everyone else has no strong opinion on the matter. The user's logic behind this move seemed to have solely hinged on it being consistent with a parallel move of the page "Category:Assassins" to "Category:Assassin Brotherhood members"—again without community discussion and using a bot.
Lacrosse seems to support the move of that page under the plausibly valid reason that we should have an article on assassins, with a lower ⟨A⟩, and we therefore need a separate page for Assassin Brotherhood members to disambiguate from it. The reasons and questions regarding having a separate category for assassins rather than only a category on Assassins are further explained on that talk page.
However, the point I wish to make here is that even if our category page for members of the Assassin Brotherhood is named "Category:Assassin Brotherhood members" rather than "Category:Assassins", this does not mean that we also have to change "Category:Templars" to "Category:Templar Order members". It's not that consistency here doesn't matter, but this is not the kind of consistency that is needed. The two don't have to match 1:1 because the guideline for category titles should be conciseness. For example, while we may have "Category:Residents of the Farm" and "Category:Residents of Masyaf" (for the reason that we didn't seem to figure out the demonym for Masyaf), this doesn't mean that the category for people who live in Alexandria or London has to be "Category:Residents of Alexandria" or "Category:Residents of London" when more concise terms that say the same thing, "Alexandrians" and "Londoners" exist.
The consistency we are searching for is actually to use the concise term, the demonym, where it exists and only use a more extended descriptive term when there is an issue using that concise term. Arguments might be made for "Category:Assassins" owing to concerns about its ambiguity, but I don't think there is such an issue with just "Category:Templars" so this category page should not have been emptied for "Category:Templar Order members". I would also like to add that we have "Category:Proto-Templars" and "Category:Proto-Assassins" ._. though I understand we've had questions about whether they're necessary after our forum discussion. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 16:41, May 30, 2020 (UTC)
