Polis vs. city-state

First of all: sorry for my English.
As a historian I would like to make a couple of appreciations: It is often said in a didactic way that a polis is a city-state. This is not exactly like this. Greek cities were already considered poleis centuries before they can be conceptually defined as States. In the same way, although Athens paradigmatically complies with the idea of city-state, the condition of the rest is very debatable. In fact although Athens as a polis dates from several centuries before the sixth century b.C., can hardly be considered "state" before Solon and even Cleisthenes (vi CENTURY).
On the other hand, for example, Sparta was NEVER a city-state as such: It was actually made up of 4 villages, which never came to melt (synecism) as such.
That is why I propose to abstain from using the concept of "city-state" when talking about the Greek poleis due to their inaccuracy.

This is very intriguing Spanish Assassin. First of all, I would like to really thank you for explaining all this as I certainly have always been confused as to the difference between a city-state and a poleis. In fact, I was still wondering about the difference hours earlier when creating this category. The issue here is that even the definition of state is highly contested. In any case, I think we should definitely consider your proposal, but I'm just not sure if it's convenient in terms of categorization. You are welcome to go ahead and immediately edit the description of this category to be more accurate though. Sol Pacificus^(Cyfiero) 13:34, June 25, 2018 (UTC)
