Ancient Egypt ended at the latest 525 BC, according to most historians. And the reason it can't be further back than 700 BC (well, 8th century, so 800 BC; my bad) is due to the fact that ancient Greece/Rome both technically cropped up around that time. That's assuming they want to bring the protagonist to either of these locations.

Is it really as clear cut as that? It's true that Egypt, from 525 BC onwards, was ruled by Persian rulers. But their culture wasn't significantly altered and Egypt was still considered powerful and influential. Which is why I regard 332 BC as the cut off date, as that's when their power and influence started to diminish.

Good point about Ancient Greece/Rome.

Assuming this will be a trilogy, I'd guess the timeframe for Greece to be c. 500s. Perhaps the protagonist will be involved in the overthrow of the last tyrant of Athens, which resulted in the establishment of the Athenian Democracy in 508 BC.
