Oh actually this novel idea really impressed me, and I wholeheartedly approve of it. The reason is because in the past couple of years while playing Unity and Syndicate, I came to notice how most of the time while traveling through the city, my eyes are glued to the mini-map to see where I should go with just minimal recognition of my immediate surroundings, enough not to bump into anything if I'm not in a mission. Or otherwise, I just refer to it so often that I fail to appreciate the level of art and detail that Ubisoft has put into bringing the cities to life. If others share this same problem as me, I think the mini-map might actually be a factor in people not appreciating and enjoying the environments as much as they perhaps should. I find, for example, that if I played Unity while taking it more slowly, or with HUD-off, walking some ways instead of just charging my way through, that the game is actually funner and there's a more immersive experience. I ended up feeling a bit guilty, like all this time I hadn't been appreciating the effort Ubisoft put to the cities, which I think is a major part of Assassin's Creed. (Though honestly, one problem with Unity's atmosphere is that they put Paris forever stuck in like September Massacres mode so it just seems depressing & also ruins the sense of immersion since nothing ever changes).

Yes, I could always turn off mini-map myself, but I actually found it hard to will myself to do so because of the urge to have the easiest and most convenient reference to a destination. So removing the mini-map I think is a good call to encourage players to appreciate the beauty of the game's environment more.
