The Black Sea is a body of water between the Aegean Sea and the Caspian Sea. It acts as a natural border between Europe and Asia, being situated east of the Balkans, west of Caucasus, and north of Anatolia.
History[edit | edit source]
The city of Themiskyra was located along the coastline of Black Sea in antiquity. In Greek mythology, it was said to be the dwelling place of the Amazons, most notably their queen, Hippolyta.[1] The Greek historian Herodotos was well-known to have traveled the Black Sea, among others.[2]
In 1853, Emperor Napoleon III of France sent a warship to the Black Sea to push Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I to acknowledge French Catholicism as the official religion over the Holy Land's Christian sites. As those sites were controlled by the Eastern Orthodox Church, Tsar Nicholas I responded by sending two corps to the banks of the Danube. The resulting political tensions escalated into the Crimean War, in which France and its allies fought to stop Russia's expansionism and secure the neutrality of the Black Sea.[3]
