Black Forest, Germany

The Black Forest is a large forested mountain range in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany, close to the borders with France and Switzerland.
History[edit | edit source]
By 1747, Jack Digweed, the former valet of the Kenway family, lived in a cabin fifteen miles north of the Black Forest town of St. Peter. On 14 July, the British Templars Haytham Kenway and Reginald Birch, hoping to interrogate Digweed about his alleged involvement in the attack on the Kenway Mansion and Jennifer Scott's abduction twelve years prior, arrived in the town after intercepting a letter addressed to Digweed.[1]
The two Templars questioned a local shopkeeper, who was hesitant to provide any information at first, but relented when Haytham threatened his son Christophe's life. The man revealed that two British soldiers had come by earlier, demanding Digweed's whereabouts and blackmailing him into keeping quiet. Following this lead, Haytham and Birch rode to Digweed's cabin and, as they approached it, the former spotted one of the soldiers riding back.[1]
At the cabin, Haytham and Birch found the second soldier torturing Digweed, and he fled at the sight of the Templars. While Birch stayed with Digweed and secretly silenced him, Haytham chased the fleeing soldier and pinned him down by stabbing his kidney. The soldier then mocked Haytham, revealing that his father Edward had been an Assassin and had been killed for something in his possession.[1]
After the man succumbed to his injury, Haytham searched his body and found papers indicating that he was a soldier from Edward Braddock's regiment in the Dutch Republic. Returning to Birch, Haytham was told that Digweed had died from his wounds and resolved to find the soldier he had seen leave earlier.[1] After a day of riding,[2] he caught up with him, but both men were soon knocked out by Braddock's soldiers, who mistook them for deserters and took them to Zwolle to be hanged.[3]
