Ahmad ibn Fadlan
Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a 10th century Arab scholar and traveler, who gained famed for his account of his travels as a member of an embassy of the Abbasid Caliphate during the reign of al-Muqtadir, to the king of the Volga Bulgars. In 921, Ahmad travelled from Baghdad to what is now central Russia, where he met a northern people known as the Bulgars. He then became the first Muslim scholar to make an account of their traditions, which included burning their dead kings with their ships.[1]

The loading screen tips in the 2023 video game Assassin's Creed: Mirage mention ibn Fadlan under the title "The 13th Diplomat". This obliquely references the 1999 film The 13th Warrior, which loosely adapts the tale of Beowulf and combines it with details from ibn Fadlan's account of the Vikings.
