I am sorta familiar with that story, especially with the things in the jar (AKA Pandora's box). In Final Fantasy VI (Also known as FF3 in the US SNES version), the leader of the Returners (resistance against the Empire), named Bannon seeks to convince the main character, Terra (or Tina in the Japanese version) to join their cause. Bannon talks about all the things in the box that was opened, which you listed. And then he said, "what remained was a small ray of hope." And he called Terra their ray of hope for defeating the Empire.
