Lucian (died c. 875) was the leader of a group of bandits during the late 9th century CE operating out of Saint Helen's Spring to the northwest of Lincoln in Lincolnscire. He also controlled the smuggling routes into the city via the Old Lincoln Sewers.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In the mid 870s Lucian was approached by a man from Lincoln offering money for safe passage through the sewers to Bolingbroke. Seeing the chance for even more wealth. Lucian told his men to see what was being smuggled out of the city and extort them for double the money if worth it, unaware that it was actually Hundbeorht, the local ealdorman, being smuggled out. This led to an altercation between Lucian's men and the ealdorman's forces with both side taking losses but ultimately Hundbeorht ultimately making it to Bolingbroke.[1]
Soon after Lucian and his men were killed at their camp near Saint Helen's Spring by the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, who proceeded to loot a sparth as spoils.
