The Witan Hall

The Witan Hall was an Anglo-Saxon great hall, used by the Witan, in Wincestre, Hamtunscire.

History[edit | edit source]

In 877, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir arrived at the Witan Hall to stop Bishop Ealhferth from enacting his plot to assassinate King Alfred. Despite the multiple decoys, Eivor identified the real Ealhferth and killed the Order Preost. After both Alfred and the reeve Goodwin thanked her for her intervention, Eivor was met by the bishop's sister, Harriet. Although angered by her brother's death, Harriet assisted Eivor by giving her a key to Ealhferth's workplace at the Bishop's Residence as she hated the Order's influence over her brother.[1]

In 878, King Alfred held a meeting at the great hall to plead his cause of building fortifications against the Vikings around Wincestre. Despite some resistance, Brother Ealric arrived with Bishop Denewulf, who voiced the "Church's" support for Alfred's cause. Right after, the ealdormen of Wincestre reluctantly pledged their support for Alfred.[2]

During her time in Wincestre, Eivor inspected the Witan Hall and came across a locked door. Unlocking it, Eivor made her way up the hall's tower and found a chest, from which she looted a Tungsten ingot.[3]
