Yi Sun-sin (이순신; 1545 – 1598) was a Korean admiral and military general of the Joseon dynasty, best known for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin War.[1]

Often regarded as one of the greatest and most brilliant naval commanders in history, he participated in at least twenty-three battles, achieving victory in all of them despite overwhelming odds. He is a national hero of Korea and a prominent figure in the nation's history, having several towns named after him and being the subject of countless works about his achievements.[1]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

In 1725, Yi Sun-sin was mentioned by the Joseon engineer Yun Pyeong-Gyu after the latter's turtle ships proved successful in breaching Admiral Zheng's blockade. Yun told an astonished Edward Kenway that armored ships would become the norm in the future, and pondered what the late Yi Sun-sin would think about how much naval warfare had advanced since his time.[2]
