Romania is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Ukraine to the north and east, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast.

History[edit | edit source]

During the 15th century, the Kingdom of Wallachia, situated in modern-day southern Romania, was ruled by the Voivode Vlad Tepes, who was secretly a member of the Templar Order. The Wallachian noble Vali cel Tradat joined the Assassin Brotherhood, but lost faith in their cause and defected to the Templars after the Ottoman Assassins killed Vlad in 1476, allowing the Ottoman Empire to march into Wallachia and turn it into a vassal state.[1]

After the end of the Crimean War in 1856, both Wallachia and Moldavia were granted independence from the Ottomans and united into a single kingdom, Romania.[2] Following the end of World War I in 1918, the territory of Transylvania, which had been previously ruled by Austria-Hungary, elected to unite with the Kingdom of Romania, forming the modern state. During World War II, Romania fought on the side of the Axis and, despite switching sides towards the end of the conflict, was forced to cede some of its territories, including Moldova, which was absorbed into the Soviet Union and subsequently became an independent state following the Union's collapse.[3]
