The Valkyries were an elite unit of protectors utilized by the Æsir during the Isu Era to guard people and locations of high value. After the Great Catastrophe, the Valkyries were remembered in Norse mythology as an all-female group of psychopomps, believed to lead the spirit of fallen warriors to Valhalla.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
One notable Valkyrie was Hildr, who served as the Eden Ring Station's Chief Guardian[4] and Freyja's bodyguard; she would later enter into a secret relationship with her client.[1] All the while, the Station's staff had monitored the Sun's activity and projected that a coronal mass ejection would strike Earth and cause an extinction event unless the energy was diverted or dispersed. The Isu who had not fallen to petty political infighting[4] tested many methods to save the world, with their second attempt aiming to expand the Rings of Eden's personal energy shield to encompass the planet. However, the necessary energy input was too much to save even a single city before the deadline and the project was abandoned,[5] which in turn meant the Station would be shut down. Hildr appealed to the Isu's High Council for more time and resources, but never returned to her post.[4]
Around the same time, Hildr discovered that Odin had devised a secret plan for him and eight others to survive the catastrophe while leaving Ásgarðr and the Nine Realms to burn. Furious at Odin's selfishness, Hildr organized the Valkyries into a revolt, but Freyja informed her husband of the plan. Incensed at his subjects' perceived betrayal, Odin quashed the burgeoning resistance, imprisoned Hildr,[1] seized and locked away her armor, and stripped away her immortality.[6]
Later, Freyja, remorseful over her role in Hildr's predicament, smuggled her medallion into her former lover's cell. However, Hildr resented the gift and had it sent away to her daughters, who would later pass it down to their own descendants, along with their burning desire for revenge against Odin and whatever form he would take in the future. Hildr, having been imprisoned in an underground cell, ultimately survived the Sun's devastation once the Great Catastrophe came, but was left to starve to death.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Hildr's lineage eventually extended to Hildiran, a Norse woman living in England during the 9th century. She manipulated the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir, Odin's incarnation, into helping her find and unlock Odin's Vault so she could retrieve Hildr's armor, with which she attempted to kill Eivor to achieve her family's ancestral vengeance against Odin. However, Eivor defeated Hildr, who subsequently made amends with her after recognizing that she and Odin were nothing alike.[1]
In 2020, while the Assassin Layla Hassan relived Eivor's genetic memories, she added a number of Valkyrie-themed Animus mods to her Animus session which allowed Eivor to wear an armor set inspired by the spirits, decorate Ravensthorpe with Valkyrie statues, and display sails and other finery featuring the Valkyries aboard her longship, the Sea-Chariot.[3]
