Roman Kingdom
The Roman Kingdom, also referred to as the Roman monarchy,[1] was the earliest period of Roman history, beginning with the city's founding c. 753 BCE[2] and ending with the overthrow of the kings and the establishment of the Republic c. 510 BCE.[3][4]
History[edit | edit source]
Archaeological evidence points to Rome beginning from pastoral settlements on Palatine Hill, while myths tell of the city's founding by Romulus and Remus, who had been raised in the nearby cave of Lupercal by a she-wolf.[3] At some point before 753 BCE, Romulus infiltrated the residence of King Amulius of Alba Longa to free Remus from imprisonment and assassinate Amulius.[5] In 753 BCE, the twins entered a fatal duel over irreconcilable views about Rome and the Sword of Mars, with Romulus killing Remus and becoming the first king of Rome.[2] Romulus then used the sword's powers to conquer and build his kingdom.[6] A Sabine settlement at Quirinal Hill was assimilated by Rome in the 7th century BCE.[7] The nearby town of Fidenae was also conquered by the Roman army, an event seen as key to the expansion of early Rome.[8]
In 717 BCE, after reigning for decades, Romulus softened towards his brother's vision of free will, also realizing that Rome had become corrupted by the desire for order and supremacy.[2] That very year, some of the senators, patres familias, and militia captains, unhappy with Romulus' politics and manipulated by the Cult of Uni, plotted to assassinate the king. Members of the Shields of Mars, a group formed by Romulus' followers, killed the mastermind behind the plan.[9] An attempt on the king's life the next day still happened, though it was also easily foiled.[10] Romulus was accused of tyranny and despotism as discontent simmered among the citizens,[11] he disappeared, instructing his followers to act in secret to defend free will.[2] Romulus was then succeeded by Numa Pompilius.[12]
