Lammas is a yearly festival that is held on 1 August that marks the First Fruits of the harvest season.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
On 1 August 875, the Lammas festival was held in Colcestre and prepared by the thegns of Essexe and financed by Ealdorman Birstan. In attendance, Bristan's wife Estrid was accompanied by Anglo-Saxon soldiers, sent by thegn Eadred. However, the festival proved as the perfect cover for the false kidnapping plot orchestrated by the Vikings Rollo and Eivor Varinsdottir. At a certain signal, Rollo, Eivor, and their company of warriors disrupted the festival while Eivor abducted Estrid single-handedly. Playing the damsel in distress, Estrid called for her guards but Eivor took her out of the city. Successfully, both played their parts as Eivor brought Estrid to Rollo's camp at Wulfaswic.[2]
