Jiu Wei
Jiu Wei (died 215 BCE) was the chef of Jade Spring Village during the Qin dynasty. To the locals, he was also known as "Big Chef". Because he regularly went to the nearby city of Yangzhou to buy his cooking ingredients, he was considered a contact for Yangzhou matters by the youxia of Jade Spring.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 215 BCE,[2] Jade Spring was suddenly attacked and destroyed by Qin soldiers from the Department of Immortality. Jiu Wei survived the initial massacre because he was away at the Yangzhou market procuring ingredients as usual. He did not hear about the disaster until one of the youxia survivors arrived at the market to find and warn him. The chef was deeply worried about his family's safety, but the youxia did not know whether they were among the survivors, only informing him that their plan was to gather survivors of their community at the stables by the back gate. Jiu Wei immediately set off to alert the other Jade Spring villagers he was in touch with in Yangzhou.[3]
Unbeknownst to Jiu Wei and the youxia, the plan was a trap by their informant Nie Jing to ambush the remaining survivors and exterminate them once and for all. While waiting for the youxia's return from investigating Grand General Meng Tian's role in the attack, they were set upon by Qin soldiers. All but the youxia Yu Ying perished at the scene before the other youxia arrived to kill the ambushers.[4]
