Ögedei Khan
Ögedei Khan (ᠣᠭᠡᠳᠡᠢ ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ; c. 1186 – 1241) was the third son of Genghis Khan and the second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, succeeding his father on 13 September 1229 and ruling until his death. He was the uncle of the brothers Hülegü and Kublai.

Conquering Jin[edit | edit source]
Ögedei conquered the Jin dynasty of China in 1234, a feat he would be remembered for among his fellow Mongols.[1]
Death[edit | edit source]
He was killed by the Assassin Nergüi on 11 December 1241, ending his 12-year rule over the Mongol Empire. This was done as part of a joint plan between the Assassins Nergüi and Qulan Gal, who would later kill Ögedei's brother just seven months later, leaving a power vacuum and sowing chaos in the Mongol Empire all in order to stop Batu Khan's advance through Europe.[2]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In 1259, during the beginning of the Siege of Diaoyu Castle, Bayan, a warrior of the Buryat tribe and commander for the Mongol Empire, told of Ögedei's great deeds to a young Tangghut conscript Chen Lun to boost his morale.[1]
