Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians (died 911), was the ruler of Mercia following the death of King Ceolwulf II.[1] The husband of Æthelflæd, he was thus son-in-law to Alfred the Great.[2]

Biography

Around 889 CE, Alfred offered Æthelred's position as Lord of the Mercians to jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan. However, she turned it down allowing him to keep his title.[3]

After a new wave of Vikings from continental Europe landed at Kent during the early 890s, Æthelred and his brother-in-law Edward the Elder pushed them back. In 893, Æthelred's army fought a Viking force led by Hastein in the Battle of Buttington and forced them to flee into Essex.[2]
