Wei (died 824) was a former Chinese rebel and bombmaker hired by Hidden Ones' Master Assassin Fuladh Al Haami.

Biography

Early life

In 754, Wei experienced the Flower Banquet in his home village Duling, but it was overcome with violence when Chancellor Yang Guozhong ordered the death of many farmers over flowers. It was at this point Wei met Hidden One Li E, who sought out Yang. Ultimately, he heard how Yang met his end due to Li E and how he recognized the Hidden Ones' power as eternal.[1]

Later years

During the reign of Emperor Xianzong, Wei fled from his village after the rebellion against the Emperor ended in failure. After the rebellion, his vialge was approached by Fuladh, who ultimately hired him to be part of a group to track the Martyrs of Agaunum and recover the case they guarded. Wei accepted the terms and was told to meet Fuladh at a tavern in Fustat.[1]

In 824, Wei met both his employer and his fellow group members at the tavern while Fuladh discussed the task to all of them and what they must recover from the Martyrs. While they readied themselves, the group headed out to track the Martyrs while Wei and Roshan grew amicable with each other. Speaking only in his native tongue, he informed her of his past and how their employer was part of a group that worked across the nations. Meanwhile, he used gunpowder to create a bomb but he and Roshan were constantly interrupted by Francis, a Christian prophet and their fellow group member. The next day, the group planned to ambush the Martyrs, with Wei positioned to drop a bomb on them on Francis' signal.[1]

However, the ambush went awry due to the bomb being dropped too early. A fight ensued between the majority of the group and the Martyrs with their guards, while Wei and Francis were away from the conflict. After the Martyrs left, tensions rose after Samoan warrior Nafanua accused Dias of killing Mared to save himself. Dias, backed by Northmen twins Geir and Gud, faced off between Nafanua, supported by the rest, until Azadeh calmed down the situation. However, blame was put onto Wei, who was seen as a target by the other men. As a result, Nafanua took Wei as her riding partner to safeguard him while they all tracked the Martyrs around the mountains.[2]

Death

Deciding to go up and down the mountain towards the Red Sea, the group climbed the mountain ahead, with much struggle. Wei, along with Azadeh and Roshan, were in a group and tied a rope around themselves for stability. However, on their descent, Wei and Azadeh begin to fall after Roshan lost her footing. Luckily, Geir and Gud saved them but Gud stepped too harshly on the terrain, which loosed rocks atop Wei. Wei was struck by a fist-sized rock and began to bleed profusely. His rope became loose and he grabbed onto the mountain. Roshan rushed to him but it was too late as the blood made the rock slippery and Wei fell to his death in silence.[3]

While they all became saddened over Wei's death, they completed their descent and found a nearby port. However, Roshan, joined by Azadeh, left to find Wei's body. Roshan ultimately found what was left of Wei with Azadeh's wolf Onyx besides the remains. To honor her late friend, Roshan took his jade trinket and promised to deliver it to his loved ones in Duling.[3]

Equipment and skills

Along with crafting bombs, Wei was also skilled in climbing mountains since he was a youth.[1]
