Vigilantes are groups of men that will aid you if you find yourself being chased through a city.

If you are being pursued, and you enter into an area with vigilantes in it, they will step in and impede the way of the guards who are trying to chase you, much like the lines of guards who block your way when you are attempting to flee. Enemies can also be easily killed while in a Vigilante's grasp.

Assassin's Creed

You can unlock vigilantes throughout cities in the game by saving citizens who are in trouble with the guards.

Vigilantes will grab guards, knock them over, rough them up a bit and do whatever it takes to get them off your back, while you run and make a clean getaway. Alternatively, you can use them to stop the guards from defending themselves, granting you a quick and easy kill. If a large number of guards are chasing you, you can use them to block a few of the men whilst you deal with the rest.

If you walk into a group of them, they will let you in and watch you for a couple seconds, saying things like "Thank you for saving my daughter" or "I am forever in your debt for saving her." These lines make it seem like the Vigilantes are those who are related to the citizens Altair has saved.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, all the old functionalities of Vigilantes return. Guards will attack the vigilantes even if they're pursuing you, and the vigilantes will continue just grabbing and pulling at them. They will often be seen near groups of stationary guards, taunting them and yelling at them, though the guards will not pay them any attention. If all guards are killed with the assistance of vigilantes, they will disassemble and walk off. They likely appear due to the removal of a nearby Borgia Tower.
