The Valkyries were an elite guard of protectors utilized by the Æsir during the Isu Era to guard people and locations of high value. After the Great Catastrophe, the Valkyries were remembered in Norse mythology as an all-female group of psychopomps, believed to lead the spirit of fallen warriors to Valhalla.[1]

History

One notable Valkyrie was Hildr, who served as the Chief Guardian of the Eden Ring Station[2] and the bodyguard of Freyja, whom she entered into a secret relationship with.[3] After learning that the Station would be shut down due to the Rings of Eden initiative being unable to reach completion before the Great Catastrophe, Hildr went to appeal to the Isu High Council, but never returned to her post.[2]

Around the same time, Hildr discovered that Odin had devised a secret plan for him and eight others he trusted to survive the catastrophe while leaving the rest of Asgard and the Nine Realms to burn. Furious at Odin's selfishness, Hildr organized the Valkyries into a revolt, but Freyja informed her husband of the plan. As a result, the burgeoning resistance was quashed and Hildr was imprisoned by Odin,[3] who also locked away her armor and stripped her of her immortality.[4]

Later, Freyja, remorseful over her role in Hildr's predicament, managed to smuggle her medallion into her former lover's cell. However, Hildr resented the gift and had it sent away to her daughters, who would later pass it down to their own descendants, along with their burning desire for revenge against Odin and whatever form he would take in the future. Hildr, having been imprisoned in an underground cell, ultimately survived the Sun's devastation once the Great Catastrophe came, but was left to starve to death.[3]

Legacy

Hildr's lineage eventually extended to Hildiran, a Norse woman living in England during the 9th century. She manipulated the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir, Odin's reborn form, into helping her find and unlock Odin's Vault so she could retrieve Hildr's armor, with which she attempted to kill Eivor to achieve her family's ancestral vengeance against Odin. However, Hildiran was defeated and subsequently made amends with Eivor, after recognizing that she and Odin were nothing alike.[3]

In 2020, a number of Valkyrie-themed Animus mods were made available to the Assassin Layla Hassan during her Animus session reliving Eivor's genetic memories, which allowed the Viking to wear a set of armor inspired by the spirits, decorate Ravensthorpe with Valkyrie statues, and display sails and other finery featuring the Valkyries aboard her longship, the Sea-Chariot.[1]
