Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the regions of Italy.

History

One of the main four Greek tribes, the Ionians founded several colonies in Sicily and South Italy.[1] During the Peloponnesian War, Alkibiades convinced Athens to send a military expedition to Sicily, which was disastrous for the Athenians, who lost their entire expeditionary force, signaling the beginning of the end of Athens' power.[2]

In the 1st century BCE, Sicily was a part of the Roman Republic and the home to Apollodorus before he left for Alexandria as a young man.[3][4]
