Obsidian Eye

The Obsidian Eye was a model of an eye made of obsidian glass and veined with gold[1] which belonged to the crime lord known as the Cyclops of Kephallonia.

History

The Cyclops of Kephallonia earned his nickname after being blinded in his left eye. Far from embracing it as an intimidating alias, however, the Cyclops found it offensive, and his insecurities over it led to him to designing this obsidian model of an eye to use as a replacement.[2]

In 431 BCE, the prosthetic was stolen by the Spartan mithios Kassandra from the Cyclops' Lair on the suggestion of her friend Markos to hold for ransom against the Cyclops.[2] Not long afterwards, the mercenary sneaked into his base at Kleptous Bay with the intention of assassinating him and stealing his ship, the Adrestia. She confronted him as he was torturing the sailor Barnabas, and taunted him with his stolen prosthetic. When he demanded for it to be returned, she palmed a small pebble and shoved it up a goat's anus before gesturing him to retrieve the "eye".[3] Provoked into a rage, the humiliated thug attacked her and was killed along with his henchmen in the ensuing fight.[4]

In truth, Kassandra had pocketed the eye upon seeing it and realizing its actual value. Before leaving Kephallonia, she entrusted it to her friend, the orphan Phoibe, insisting that she keep it a secret from Markos, to only sell it if she got into trouble, and to spend the coins wisely.[3] A year later, however, Markos had learned that Phioibe owned the eye. He convinced her to give it to him to invest, hoping to double its value, but the money he gained from it he promptly lost in another far-fetched endeavor.[5]
