Mount Atago (愛宕山) is a mountain located in Kyoto, Japan. During the Sengoku period, it was considered part of Tamba.

History

Starting in the 8th century, its shrine has been a center for Shugendō, a regional mix of Mountain and Buddhist beliefs, with the inner area paying respect to the tengu Tarobo. In 1582, before his betrayal, a tale of Akechi Mitsuhide was told of how he prayed at the shrine and even wrote poetry that detailed his desire for complete power and decision to attack Oda Nobunaga.[1]

Later in the year, the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke climbed the mountain to its shrine to reconnect Akechi Mitsuyoshi with his sister Hosokawa Tama, a Japanese Templar. She agreed to betray Portuguese Master Templar Nuno Caro for the safety of Mitsuyoshi. Giving Caro's location to Yasuke, she had Mitsuyoshi leave their family's katana at the shrine before leaving the shrine and the Templar Order behind.[2]
