Hannah: "No one ever gets to meet the Mentor. No one knows where he is or even what he looks like. Some of the guys think he's made up. Oz, the Great and Powerful."
Paul: "If something isn't seen, Ms. Mueller, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist."
Hannah Mueller and Paul Bellamy, regarding the Mentor[src]

The Mentor (unknown - 2000), whose real name was unknown, served as the Mentor of the Assassin Order. An elderly man with graying hair, the Mentor's years of service to the Assassin cause had imbued him with a worldly wisdom that allowed him to see the big picture while coordinating the activities of the Order.

The demands of secrecy forced the Mentor to remain on the move, frequently traveling between a number of offices across the world to remain below the radar of the Assassins' ancient enemies, the Templars. Such was the Mentors devotion to remaining undetected that he acquired an almost mythic reputation, and many Assassins did not believe the Mentor truly existed.

While meeting with the up-and-coming young Assassin, Daniel Cross, at his facility in Dubai, the Mentor was betrayed by Cross—an unwitting Templar pawn behaviorally conditioned to infiltrate the Assassin Order and slay their leader—dying by the hidden blade he had bequeathed to the young Assassin only moments prior.

Biography

Guiding the Order

"I must always be three steps ahead of our enemies to ensure that power is balanced and not abused. Countries. Corporations. We change the system from within. I must be everywhere at once, forever vigilant. If I am not—if the Mentor fails to see the bigger picture—the entire course of human evolution pays the price."
―The Mentor[src]

The Assassin known to his followers only as "The Mentor" rose to his current position at a point in time prior to the year 2000. As Mentor of the global Assassin Order, he found the need for secrecy a high priority, and to evade detection by the Assassin's age old enemy, the Templars, the Mentor led the Assassins from a distance; remaining removed from his lieutenants and constantly traveling between a number of secret locations around the world, the Mentor built up an aura of mystery to shroud both his identity and whereabouts.[1] Over time, he became something of a legendary figure in the eyes of his followers, who, unsure of whether or not he even truly existed, likened their enigmatic leader to the fictional Wizard of Oz.[2]

As the world approached the dawn of the 21st century and a new millennium, the Mentor made a priority of the year 2000's United States presidential election. With intelligence that the Templars planned to insert their puppet into office,[1] the Mentor began preparing countermeasures as early as 1998. That same year, Daniel Cross—a young man with an unknown connection to the Assassins and who was suffering from inexplicable visions of the past—had a vision of the Mentor and became determined to meet the Assassin leader face to face.[2] Over the next two years, Cross underwent the rigorous training of an Assassin, all the while seeking out the Mentor, who was equally aware of the young man's quest in addition to the visions he was having.[1]

Assassination

"I feel like...like I was made to wear this. Like I was made to use it. I feel like every step of my life had led me to this moment."
"We all have our purpose, Daniel. Yours is becoming clear to you."

The Mentor finally arranged to meet with Cross in 2000, when he had Cross covertly transported to his facility in Dubai. After introducing himself and vindicating Cross's search, the two discussed the nature of the Assassins and their role in the modern world. The Mentor explained the responsibilities that came with his position as the leader of the Assassins, and attempted to understand Cross's visions. While together, the Mentor also decided to personally conduct Cross's official induction to the Assassin Order. However, when he presented the newly-initiated Assassin with his old, ceremonial hidden blade, Cross suddenly turned the weapon on the Mentor himself, stabbing the Assassin leader in the throat.[1] Unknown to either, Cross had been a Templar sleeper agent,[3] subjected to behavioral conditioning designed to influence him to infiltrate the Assassins, seek out their leader, and kill him when given the chance. Confused, the Mentor slumped to the floor of his office, questioning why Cross had attacked him and cursing the Templars before succumbing to his injuries and dying.[1]

Personality and traits

"We inspire change by example, Mr. Cross. Not by force. Not anymore. Give a man a chance to act honorably, without manipulation, and he usually will. For the sake of humanity, we have to believe that."

By the year 2000, the Mentor was an elderly man whose appearance was indicative of his years. His hair had grayed and his face was lined with wrinkles. Though he had been physically removed from the daily actions of the Assassins, the Mentor remained in possession of his ceremonial hidden blade, which he kept in a glass case within his Dubai office. He also continued to dress in white,[1] a color long associated with the Assassins.[4][5] The Mentor also kept at least one dog, resembling a German shepherd, with him at his Dubai offices.[1]

The elderly Mentor took pride in the legacy of the Assassin leaders that preceded him, and viewed his duties and that tradition with solemnity and reverence. As the Mentors who came before trained their successors and imparted upon them their accumulated knowledge and experiences, the Mentor was both wise and knowing. He held an understanding of human nature, and was aware both of genetic memory and the theoretical technology capable of allowing an individual to access it; the Mentor also quickly recognized Daniel Cross's mysterious visions as what appeared to be a naturally occurring instance of the bleeding effect. The Mentor was an avid reader, keeping a substantial collection of books—including The Will of the Universe by K.E. Tsiolkovsky—at his offices in Dubai. He also elected to decorate the interior of his offices with several statues of notable figures from Assassin history, including among them Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Iltani, and Marcus Junius Brutus.[1]
