Maria Amiel was a hermetic practitioner who lived in western Europe during the 16th century. She was the assistant of Bombastus from 1524 until 1527.
Divine Science
Maria returned to Professor Bombastus' lab and found him with a stranger. Bombastus introduced him as Giovanni Borgia, who greeted her. Giovanni asked the professor questions while Maria remained quiet. However, Bombastus refused to answer his questions, so Borgia demanded him to read The Book to get answers. Bombastus confessed The Book is incomplete and that he will need " the other half." Not knowing where it is, the professor offered the help of Maria.
Maria and Giovanni spend a week in the university library looking for the "Divine Science", as Professor Bombastus calls it. There, Maria learned that Bombastus transmuted silver into gold, and Giovanni wrote down the formula himself. She suggested that he had a vision of the contents of the other half, to which both knew to read books about transmutation. After a long search, they found a journal of a French alchemist, Flamel, who had turned lead into gold, based on the teachings of Abraham of Würzburg. They learned that Abraham had divided his knowledge into two manuscripts: "True Magic" and "Divine Science." Knowing that, the two of them decided to travel to Paris.
Paris
Maria and Giovanni prepared for their journey to Paris. As they travelled, Maria learned of Giovanni's adventures in the New World. In Besançon, they decided to travel with a group of merchants to Paris. They share many thoughts along the way until they reach Paris. Maria wishes to explore the city, but Giovanni wished to find Flamel's book. They went to the royal library, where they found Flamel's last will and testament, which said his wife's nephew inherited the book. While searching for the book, Maria learns from Giovanni rumors about people matching the Flamels, performing miracles. She pondered about this before resuming her search for the nephew. Unfortunately, Flamel's nephew died a long time ago, so they began searching for living relatives. Though it took a few days, she found one of the nephew's descendants. Giovanni insisted they visit him in the morning.
They left the royal library and continue to talk along the way back to their hostel. However, in the city, they have walked into an ambush by brigands. Giovanni quickly dispatches all of the assailants, much to Maria's amazement. The next morning, Maria followed Giovanni to the house of the man they seek. The old man is suspicious,and refused to speak to them. Though reluctant at first, the old man told them that his cousin, Jacques Henri, inherited the book. They found Henri and learned that he didn't care about the book and agreed to sell it to them. They returned to the hostel and study the book, which details ancient hermetic practices, symbols and numbers. Giovanni, however, does not share her enthusiasm, claiming the book was "translated by human hands." That night, the two of them went to the Cimetière des innocents, to "prove or disprove a rumor" as Giovanni puts it. The two entered the narrow crypt, where they found Nicolas Flamel's tomb. Giovanni removed the tomb lid and both discovered his and his wife's tomb is empty.
Troyes
Maria and Giovanni prepared to leave for Basel, but Giovanni insisted to visit the city of Troyes on the way back. Whilst travelling, Maria noticed Giovanni in a dark mood as they approached Troyes. He rents a single room for "her own protection." The next morning, Maria noticed Giovanni in a better mood and the two of them went out for a tour of the city. They passed by the cathedral and the market and Maria lost sight of Giovanni. She is then approached by a stranger, who asks her peculiar questions. Just then, Giovanni kills the man and pulls Maria away. When they stopped running, a furious Giovanni asks her why she's "conspiring with the Viper." However, his fury melted and the two of them kissed.
While Giovanni confessed killing the man, the pair escaped Troyes through streets and alleyways. He showed Maria a sealed letter he took from the man explaining their quest, indicating someone betrayed them. She thought if Professor Bombastus betrayed them, for he was the only one who knew about their quest. After scaling the city wall, the two hid from Templars who are on the hunt for them. After crossing a river, they are discovered by three horsemen, who were dispatched by Giovanni. The two continued towards Basel.
Basel
Maria and Giovanni eventually returned to Basel, careful not to draw attention. At Maria's suggestion, the two went to Ivan, a trusted colleague's house. His wife, Lara invited them in while they wait for her husband. Eventually, Ivan returned home and was unusually relieved to see Maria. He informed her that Professor Bombastus had gone mad and insulted all of the physicians in the university. They were told how he renounced medical treatments and threw books at doctors. They found him in front of the Münster throwing books in a bonfire. Giovanni pulled him away, but not before throwing one last book in the fire. They brought the insane professor to Ivan's house, where Lara agreed to take care of him. In the morning, they discovered Bombastus is nowhere to be found. Before they left Basel, they broke into Bombastus' laboratory, which is in shambles. Giovanni unlocks a secret compartment and takes the professor's tome.
