Luoyang (Chinese: 洛陽) is a city situated at the cradle of Chinese civilization in Henan. It is one of the four great ancient capitals of China, having served as the capital of numerous dynasties throughout the imperial period.

History

During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, the city was a secondary capital, for which it was also known as Dongdu (東都; 'eastern capital') because it was directly east of the main capital of Chang'an. In 756, the general Feng Changqing commanded Tang forces in defence of the city against An Lushan, a Turkic jiedushi who had risen in revolt. After losing battle after battle, Feng retreated west to the strategic location of Tong Pass, abandoning Luoyang to An Lushan's army. There, An declared himself emperor of the newly established Great Yan.[1]
