Branded Kilij

A kilij is a Turkish scimitar that saw ample use in the 15th and 16th centuries. The kilij's blade distinguishes itself from other regional variants of the scimitar by having a very slight curve starting from the hilt that then flares out abruptly towards the tip of the weapon. The hilt is usually pistol-shaped.[1]

A favored sword by many in the Ottoman Empire, the kilij was the standard weapon of the Janissaries, the empire's elite infantry corps, and their model was made available for public purchase in Constantinople beginning in the latter half of 1511.[2] Assassin Yusuf Tazim, who led the Ottoman Brotherhood in the early 16th century had one that was the deadliest sword in the Ottoman Assassins' armoury at the time. It was given to visiting Mentor Ezio Auditore da Firenze following his investigation on Cyril of Rhodes alongside one of his apprentices.[3]

The Spanish Brotherhood also employed kilij in their fight against the Inquisition during the Reconquista.[4]
