Hreiðmarr, anglicized as Hreidmar, was an Isu and a king of Svartálfaheimr.
Mythology
Attested to in both the Völsunga saga and the Prose Edda. Hreiðmarr was a sorcerer and the father of Regin, Fafnir, Ótr, Lyngheiðr and Lofnheiðr. After Ótr was accidentally killed by Loki, the Æsir repaid Hreiðmarr with many valuables, among which was the magical ring Andvaranaut, which had the ability could create gold. Hreiðmarr was later killed by his sons Regin and Fafnir over the ring.[1]
Biography
During his reign, Hreiðmarr lived within his personal palace.[2] He had commissioned the creation of four statues depicting the World Holders, once the foundations had been dug Hreiðmarr was pleased that his vision was coming to fruition.[3] Hreiðmarr owned a set of armor, deemed by many to be cursed as it slowly stripped its users life energy. Hreiðmarr was only able to use the armor without this effect after placing a "Mótsognir's Clarity" rune on each piece to combat the adversity.[4]
Legacy
By the time the Muspels had invaded, Hreiðmarr was deceased. The Denizens of Grenhellir Shelter often spoke out, that if Hreiðmarr was still alive they would not have to live like they did, cowering in a mountain.[4]
His legendary armor was later retrieved by Odin, who immediately suffered from the curse. Until he too did the same and placed the runes on each piece.[4]
