Hreiðmarr, anglicized as Hreidmar, was an Isu and a king of Svartálfaheimr.
Mythology
Attested to in both the Völsunga saga and the Prose Edda. Hreiðmarr was a sorcerer and the father of Regin, Fafnir, Ótr, Lyngheiðr and Lofnheiðr. After Ótr was accidentally killed by Loki, the Æsir repaid Hreiðmarr with many valuables, among which was the magical ring Andvaranaut, which had the ability could create gold. Hreiðmarr was later killed by his sons Regin and Fafnir over the ring.[1]
Biography
During his reign, Hreiðmarr lived within his personal palace.[2]
Legacy
By the time the Muspels had invaded, Hreiðmarr was deceased. The Denizens of Grenhellir Shelter often spoke out, that if Hreiðmarr was still alive they would not have to live like they did, cowering in a mountain.[3]
