Hirate Masahide
Hirate Masahide (平手 政秀, 1492 – 1553), born Hirate Kiyohide (平手 清秀),[1] was a Japanese samurai who served the Oda clan. Masahide was one of Oda Nobuhide's four[2] karō (家老, "house elder") alongside Hayashi Hidesada, Aoyama Nobumasa, and Naitō Shōsuke[3] who became tutors to his son Nobunaga after he was officially designated as heir. Masahide and the other three taught Nobunaga how to deal with military strategy and politics. In 1553, after Nobuhide's death, Masahide protested Nobunaga's behavior by committing suicide, which shocked the young man into focusing on his obligations as head of the clan.[2]
