Hell's Bells
Hell's Bells was a virtual representation of one of Jacob Frye and Evie Frye's genetic memories, relived by a Helix initiate through the Helix Navigator.
Description
The Ghost Club investigated the robberies where a demon was suspected responsible.
Dialogue
The Frye twins met with Charles Dickens.
- Dickens: There's been a spate of rather intriguing thefts about town recently.
- Evie: Robberies in London are hardly supernatural events.
- Dickens: They looked like common robberies at first, but these perpetrators have all claimed to have been under the influence of some supernatural power. I'm not so foolish as to forget that criminals will spin any yarn to avoid the law. However, these thieves all proffer the same defense: they say they were being controlled by a demon. Will you make some inquiries? One of our demon-possessed mobsmen is being held behind bars at this very moment. You may want to begin your search there.
The Frye twin interviewed the policeman and the accused criminal in the police station.
- Evie: What's that man done?
- Police: Robbed the pawnbroker's down the road.
- Criminal: A demon made me do it! I can't remember much. That's what's so queer. I've never stolen anything in my life before!
- Evie: Let's pretend that I believe you. Tell me who made you do it.
- Criminal: All I can recall is a silver watch, swinging in mid-air. It was held by someone, - or some thing! A dark presence whispering. I could only see its eyes. A demon!
- Evie: I'll need to verify this with the shopkeeper.
The Assassin then investigated the pawnshop owner for clues.
- Evie: What can you tell me about the robbery?
- Owner: There's not much to say. Most of the items did come from the same seller. Enzio Capelli, sorcerer supreme, a famous showman, from Italy. Several weeks ago he was forced to pawn his family heirlooms. Debts. I have address of the last person who redeemed something of his. A lovely pearl necklace. That helpful?
A woman arrived at the pawnshop and nicked an item.
- Owner: Not again! Stop her! Stop! Somebody stop that thief!
The twin chased the thief and tackled her.
- Thief 1: Where am I? What's happening?
- Evie: You took something from a pawn shop.
- Thief 1: It's all very hazy but - I remember something silver flashing in front of my eyes. Then I heard a sort of bell. Next thing I know, I'm here with you.
- Evie: My only lead is this mysterious buyer.
Locating the last buyer, the Frye twin witnessed another robbery.
- Civilian: My necklace!
- Evie: This chap might lead me to the "demon".
The Assassin tailed the thief.
- Enzio: Good. You want to give me the necklace, now, don't you?
- Thief 2: Yes. I want to give you the necklace now.
- Evie: Mr. Enzio Capelli, I presume? So you're responsible for the theft of your own jewels.
- Enzio: You are very much mistaken, aren't you, my child?
- Evie: Yes. I'm very much mistaken. Hold on!
- Enzio: You are very much mistaken, and now you are so very, very tired, aren't you?
- Evie: Yes. I'm very, very tired.
- Enzio: Now you're going to do a little job of work for me, aren't you?
Now hypnotized by Enzio, the Assassin found himself or herself in a cell, dancing.
- Dickens: Ha, ha, my goodness! What "fowl" behavior!
- Evie: What's going on? Where am I?
- Dickens: You've been arrested for theft! How very intriguing!
- Evie: I can't remember a jot of it.
- Dickens: Let's get you out of here. I've pulled a few strings and they won't prosecute on the account of you're losing your mind. Be free, little chicken!
Outcome
The Ghost Club member discovered that Enzio Capelli was responsible for theft by hypnotizing people. He or she was hypnotized as well.
