Hastein
Hastein was a 9th century Danish Viking chieftain.[1]
Biography
Hastein spent many years from the 860s to the 880s raiding Frankish territory in Europe.[2] One such expedition was a joint venture with Ragnar Lothbrok's son Björn Ironside sailing a fleet of 62 longships from the Loire to the Mediterranean Sea, where they harassed the Emirate of Córdoba.[1] In the early 890s, Hastein and his men landed on the shore of Kent, England, only to be quickly met with opposition from ætheling Edward the Elder and his brother-in-law Æthelred. In 893, they took Buttington Fortress, and Æthelred's subsequent siege to reclaim it ended in a stalemate. Only when Hastein's men were starving did he decide to try one last effort against Æthelred's army, but they were quickly defeated and the remaining Vikings fled into Essex, Hastein among them.[2]
