Gerhild was a Viking shieldmaiden who fought under her leader Rollo in 9th century England.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Gerhild was a childhood friend of Rollo, but grew to combat and argue against his every decision and action of his leadership. Jealous, she grew to despise Rollo, despite swearing to be his "sword-sister." Traveling to Essexe and fighting with Rollo, Gerhild aided her leader after they were asked by Ealdorman Birstan and his wife Estrid to "abduct" her so she could escape a loveless marriage. However, the plan failed as Estrid remained at Colcestre. Angry, she saw Rollo leave to drink and fool around and decided to betray him to the Saxons. After Rollo left, she spoke to a Saxon soldier about their camp but was noticed by Lork. Later that same day, the camp was attacked while Gerhild was nowhere to be found. She was eventually "spotted", however, and tied up beside Lork while the rest of the company was captured.[1]

Upon Rollo's return with his new ally, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, he saw most of his warriors gone while only Lork and Gerhild remained. Believing there was a traitor, Rollo asked Eivor to interrogate the two warriors. After talking with both Lork and Gerhild, Eivor presented her findings to Rollo and accused one of them as the traitor. From there, Rollo and Eivor then set out to find and rescue his warriors at Port Walton.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Depending on Eivor's choices, Gerhild either died by Rollo's hand after Eivor accused her of being a traitor[1] or escaped after betraying Estrid and Rollo to the Saxons.[2]
