Edward VII (Albert Edward; 1841 – 1910) was the King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India from 1901 until his death. He was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and was nicknamed "Bertie" by his mother. He was married to Alexandra of Denmark.

Biography

Birth of his son

On 13 June 1865, in a royal correspondence addressed to him from his mother, she expressed disappointment with his proposed names for his just born son, though stated her preference for the suggested Frederic above George. The Queen emphasized the tradition of adding "Albert" at the end for male descendants to mark the family line and similarly adding "Victoria" for female descendants, adding that a great many families also follow the tradition.[1] Regardless of her preference, his son was then named George Frederick Ernest Albert.[2]

Traveling to Russia

In a 16 October 1866 response to an earlier message, the Queen expressed her reservations about Albert's planned visit to Saint Petersburg, Russia for his sister-in-law's wedding, mentioning concerns about the timing, the nature of the visit, and political considerations. She reiterated what she had said two years prior, when Albert wished to be present for Dagmar's prior wedding to the Tsesarevich. Additionally, Queen Victoria voices her desire for Albert to spend more time at home and be less mobile, expressing a hope for him to be more stationary in the coming autumn and winter.[3]

Later commendations

On 22 May 1867, his mother sent him a letter informing him of her bestowal of the Insignia of the Order of the Thistle, and further commendations for the rest of their family. The Order of the Sacred Garter to his brother Arthur, Constable of the Round to Tower to his half-cousin Victor instead of his brother Alfred as originally planned, and awarding his brother-in-law Christian the position of Ranger of Windsor Park.[4]
