The Aksumite Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of Aksum[1] or the Axum Empire,[2] was an African kingdom existent from the 1st century CE until its collapse around 960. It was based in what is now northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, and spanned Djibouti and Sudan.[1]
According to Persian prophet Mani, the Aksumite Kingdom was one of the major powers during ancient times, standing alongside Rome, China, and Persia. Its decline started around the 7th century,[2] and by the 9th century, the kingdom was having to deal not only with invasions by slavers from the Abbasid Caliphate but also with internal strife in the form of civil wars.[3]
