Derelict Shrine of Camulus

The Derelict Shrine of Camulus was a former Romano-British shrine dedicated to Camulus, a Celtic deity identified with Mars in Roman mythology. Located in the central of Oxfordshire, the shrine was largely unattended to and had largely decayed by the Anglo-Saxon period.

Circa 874, the shrine was used as a forward camp by Geadric and his men in preparation for an assault on the castle of Cyne Belle, where his rival Eadwyn was based in. The Viking Eivor Varinsdottir travelled there to meet Geadric after assisting his forces in weakening Eadwyn's influence in the scire.[1]
