Ahmad ibn Fadlan
Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a 10th century Arab scholar and traveller, who gained famed for his account of his travels as a member of an embassy of the Abbasid Caliphate during the reign of al-Muqtadir, to the to the king of the Volga Bulgars.
In 921, Ahmad travelled from Baghdad to what is now central Russia, where he met a northern people known as the Bulgars. he then became the first Muslim scholar to make an account of their traditions, which included burning their dead kings with their ships.[1]
