Gaius Valerius Catullus (c. 84 BCE - 54 BCE) was a Roman poet during the late period of the Republic.

He briefly mocked Julius Caesar in his poetry, writing "I do not study overmuch to please and court you, Caesar, nor do I care much to know if you be black or you be white!". In response, Caesar invited him to his house for dinner and drinks, getting him very drunk as humiliation.
