The Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel Book written in Latin, which contains the four Gospels of the New Testament. The book takes it names from the Kells Abbey in Meath, Ireland, where it remained for several centuries. It is believed to have been created in c. 800.

History

In 879, the book was stolen after a group of Vikings led by Thorstein the Red raided the abbey and took it to their hideout in Inchroe. Thorstein later traded it for gold with several Children of Danu members who were based at the Boyne Tombs. After learning of its location from Thorstein, the jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir travelled to the tomb and killed its inhabitants, recovering the book for both King Flann Sinna and the abbot of Armagh, Eogan mac Cartaigh.[1]
