William Varley[2] (1835 – 1876), better known by his criminal alias of "Reddy the Blacksmith", was a leader of the Bowery Boys, a gang operating in New York City at the time of the American Civil War.

Biography

Early life

Formerly a blacksmith, Varley decided he did not have the knack for it and turned to a life of debauchery, but kept the title of "Blacksmith" as part of his alias.[3]

New York draft riots

The Assassin Varius had some influence over Varley, leading the Bowery Boys to ally with the Five Points' men in order to stop the 1863 draft riots.[4] Conversely, when the Templar Grand Master William M. Tweed approached Varley to try to involve his gang in the riots, the Blacksmith immediately refused.[5]
